At 4:29 am, on April 25th 1915, the Australia and New Zealand
Army Corps landed at ANZAC Cove in Gallipoli Turkey. This landing
has been commemorated ever since in Australia, New Zealand and
Turkey. Turkey holds a special ceremony every ANZAC Day at dawn
to remember the fallen soldiers who fought so bravely and lost ther
lives on this battlefield. |

The towns of Gelibolu and Canakkale mark the entrance to the
Dardanelles, the narrow straits leading from the Mediterranean to
the Maramara Sea. This was the site of the infamous Gallipoli
landings during World War I, which led to the deaths of nearly
250,000 British, Turkish and Anzac troops and brought Turkish
General Mustafa Kemal (later known as Ataturk) to fame. |
